Cavalier Magazine Celebrates 60th Anniversary with Mobile App

Magazine partners with local developer to release treasures from the archives.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn., Aug. 1, 2012 – The owners of Cavalier Magazine announced recently that they have partnered with Murfreesboro-based Golden Delicious Apps to develop apps for the iPhone and Android platforms that celebrate the storied history of the men's magazine.

The app features celebrity interviews, fiction and cover art from the vintage magazine archive. The first release, titled Cavalier Mag includes a 1966 interview with Andy Warhol at his studio known as The Factory, a short story from Stephen King called “The Cat From Hell” and a gallery of classic magazine covers.

“We have some amazing works in our archive,” said Paul Pruitt, owner of Cavalier. “We wanted to share them with the public in a way that works for a more modern audience. We're diving into our archive to bring the very best of our history to a new group of readers.”

Pruitt said future installments will include more fiction from Stephen King including short stories that have been published nowhere else, fascinating celebrity interviews and even more artwork.

“Cavalier published works by giants like Mickey Spillane, Jimmy Breslin and Isaac Asimov,” said Greg Adkins, owner of Golden Delicious Apps. “We're honored that they chose our company to help bring these treasures back to the public.”

The first installment costs $.99 and is available in Apple's App Store as well as the Android Marketplace. Additional content will be made available as an in-app purchase. Additional stories, articles and interactive features will be added (both for free and in-app purchase) throughout the rest of the year, including the Stephen King short story “Weeds” which first appeared in Cavalier in 1976 and
has never been published in other collections. A short film based on the story and starring King as the main character appears in the film “Creepshow.”

“I get a lot of requests for that story,” said Pruitt. “I'm glad to have a platform for sharing these works.”

Pruitt said future installments will include more of Stephen King’s signature horror stories, some of which have only appeared in Cavalier, along with fascinating celebrity interviews and even more artwork.

Cavalier was launched 1952 as a showcase for fiction writers and artists. It established many industry firsts. Before she made Playboy a household name, Marilyn Monroe graced the pages of the May 1953 edition. In October of 1957, Cavalier told the world about Fidel Castro in the mountains of Cuba and
published groundbreaking interviews with icons like Bob Dylan and Barbra Streisand.
